Let’s face it; some attendees are naturally gifted networkers. They walk into the meeting room of 50 strangers and immediately start working the room, passing out business cards, and making connections.
What about those attendees who are at the conference or meeting for the first time? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an application on an iPad that could help get the conversation going? That time has now arrived with Sonar.

Sonar can show attendees how they are connected by analyzing their Foursquare, Facebook, and Twitter networks. On the iPad, it will show the attendee who’s already checked into the meeting and allow them to find mutual friends. They will also be able to find shared Twitter interests and tweet directly from this application. The attendee will now see how many degrees they are separated from each other.

Here are a couple of sample screen shots:

This application, which was launched in May, can allow your attendees to make easy connections through Facebook friends or Twitter followers. Now, attendees can easily send messages to each other and then make a connection, face-to-face.

“People have spent the last 25 years uploading their identities to the Internet,” said Brett Martin, Founder and CEO of Sonar. “It (Sonar) uses the profiles people have created elsewhere instead of being dependent on a critical mass of users.”

Attendees don’t have to check-in, like Foursquare. When the event services company rents iPads and loads the application for the attendee, all the attendee needs to do is sign onto their various social networks. A recent study, commissioned by digital agency Beyond, showed that only 17% of the mobile population use location based apps, such as Foursquare. Where Facebook and Twitter are growing by leaps and bounds.

In addition, event planners should rent iPads because they are ideal in this type of meeting situation. The iPad and iPad 2 are very lightweight and easy to use while walking, standing, or sitting. In most networking situations, we are talking, walking, and standing. Why not load everything — papers, presentations, and meeting apps — all on an iPad? iPads have a long battery life, up to 10 hours, so the attendee can go the entire day without having to worry about power.
